ISLAMABAD: In preparation for the general elections of 2024, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has drafted the Code of Conduct for political parties.
The proposed Code of Conduct also incorporates recommendations from the major parties. Political parties, according to reports, will not criticize Pakistan’s sovereignty while running for office.
Additionally, the political parties would refrain from making fun of the ECP in their electoral campaigns. The proposal also states that political parties would encounter a 5% women’s quota is implemented for the general elections in 2024.
The Code of Conduct stipulates that the election agent must be a voter in the relevant constituency. Candidates running for the National Assembly are allowed to spend up to Rs. 10 million during their campaign, while candidates running for the Provincial Assembly are limited to spending no more than Rs. 4 million.
Additionally, the elected officials shall provide returning officers with a breakdown of their election-related costs.
On election day, political parties and candidates will firmly refrain from inciting violence, and it will be strictly forbidden to display firearms while running for office. Firecrackers and aerial shots will not be permitted at public events.
Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP):
Elections to the national parliament, provincial legislatures, local governments, and the office of the president of Pakistan are organized and carried out by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
ECP is an independent, autonomous, permanent, and constitutionally established federal body tasked with constituency demarcation and electoral roll preparation.
