World Cup 2023: New Zealand defeats the Netherlands by 99 runs, claiming their second victory in the sixth match of the World Cup 2023 in Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.

New Zealand Playing XI:

Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Will Young, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult.

Netherlands Playing XI:

Scott Edwards (C), Vikram Singh, Max O’Dowd, Colin Ackermann, Bas de Leede, Teja Nidamanuru, Sybrand Engelbrecht, Roelof van der Merwe, Ryan Klein, Aryan Dutt, Paul van Meekeren.

Match Summary:

Scott Edwards decided to field and started bowling with the off-spinner Aryan Dutt on a sluggish Hyderabad pitch. Aryan Dutt and Ryan Klein both started with three maiden overs, which has only happened once previously in World Cup history.

After that, though, New Zealand accelerated and reached 63-0 in just 10 overs. Will Young (70) and Rachin Ravindra (51 in 51 balls) contributed 77 after Devon Conway (32) was removed.

Mitchell ended up making 48 runs, including two sixes and five fours. However, Young’s runs are what would benefit New Zealand. Prior to strangling himself for a golden duck in the World Cup’s opening match against England, he had been caught for 12 in the warm-up match against South Africa.

While Daryl Mitchell and stand-in captain Tom Latham (53 in 46) scored quickly for their team, neither played the explosive innings that would lead New Zealand over 350. Instead, Paul van Meekeren (2-59) and Roelof van der Merwe (2-56) continued to strike for their team.

New Zealand

Will Young and Tom Latham’s outstanding innings helped New Zealand score 322/7 in 50 overs against Netherlands. Player of the Match Santner, who scored an unbeaten 36 from 17 balls with the bat before taking 5 for 59 with the ball, made history by being the first New Zealand spinner to take five wickets in a men’s ODI World Cup. He continually changed his pace on a spin-friendly ground, which is exactly the quality that makes him frightening. Of all his wickets, Scott Edwards’ was the standout.

Paul van Meekeren, Roelof van der Merwe, and Aryan Dutt each claimed two wickets for the Netherlands. Bas de Leede also grabbed a single wicket in addition to them.

With a huge total to chase, the only time Netherlands’ innings seemed to be tickling along steadily was when Ackermann and Teja Nidamanuru added 50 for the fourth wicket, before a late decision by Ackermann to send Nidamanuru back after an attempted second run resulted in the latter’s run-out. Other than Ackermann, who hit a composed 69, every other top-seven batter for Netherlands scored at least 12, but couldn’t push beyond Edwards’ 30. Netherlands got all out for 223.
